About 12-Step Meetings
In the years before Alcoholics Anonymous was established, with help from Carl Jung, there was little hope for those who suffered from alcoholism or other addictions. With AA, alcoholics have found a program of recovery that works for them. In fact, one of their slogans is, "It works." Over time, the steps and traditions of the AA program have been applied to other addictions with significant success. As a result, there are several 12-step programs for many addictions, including sexual addiction and compulsion. Research on recovery from addiction indicates that 12-step meetings are important for success. Addicts who do not attend 12-step meetings have a much more difficult time with relapses.
Sobriety and recovery from sex addiction is, for many, more difficult than recovering from chemical addictions. The heavy prevalence of sexual abuse in the backgrounds of sex addicts is one reason. In addition, sexual addiction fundamentally involves a problem with intimacy, and this usually requires therapy. People sometimes ask if both 12-step meetings and psychotherapy are needed, or if one replaces the other. For many sex addicts, meetings may be sufficient to bring about some sobriety, but alone they are not going to be adequate for recovery, just as psychotherapy alone is typically not enough for recovery. Research has indicated that it is important to include a period of psychotherapy with a therapist who is competent working with sexual addiction.
12-Step meetings offer the sex addict a means of social support that break isolation and lessen paralyzing feelings of shame. They also offer an opportunity for nonjudgmental accountability that can strengthen the addict's commitment to recovery and living a life of honesty and integrity.
There are two different 12-step meetings for sex addicts and they have basic differences in philosophy. Sexaholics Anonymous (SA), for example, defines sobriety as no sex except with committed spouse or wife. Sex Addicts Anonymous (SAA) asks the sex addict to define his own sobriety, what is a slippery slope and what is healthful and beneficial to him. This is called a Three Circle plan. Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous (SLAA) focuses on “love addiction” as well as sex addiction.
