Research has shown that the best outcomes for long term recovery from sex addiction are the result of a specific treatment protocol that involves learning about addiction and facing the reality of the place where your addictive behaviour has brought you. It also includes 12-Step attendance. If there are none available locally, you can join tele-meetings. We subscribe to this format as we want to offer you the best possible chances for success with the most difficult of the addictions.
You will be asked to read books and watch DVD's to help you understand your addiction and to help you understand yourself. You will learn about the causes of addiction and how to deal with events that are triggers for your behaviour. With the help of your therapist you will develop a safety plan for difficult circumstances such as time alone or travel. Both of these can be opportunities for sexual acting out.
After you have some sobriety the next phase is recovery. Recovery requires dealing with underlying emotional intimacy problems and addressing any childhood or adult trauma. This is critical in preventing relapse. Sex addicts have reported high incidents of childhood abuse: physical (72 percent), sexual (81 percent) and emotional (97 percent) (Carnes, 1991). Untreated sexual abuse is a frequent cause of relapse.
Involvement of partners in their own treatment may be necessary for the relationship to heal. We often recommend the partner's participation in a 12-step program like SANON or COSA.
